WHO WE ARE

New Directions for Adult Education (NDAE.org) is a group of active and retired DACE teachers which strives to improve the working conditions, benefits, and pay of DACE teachers and improve the quality of the education delivered to adult students. The group is not affiliated with UTLA nor its Adult Education Committee, although we are members of UTLA and pro-union. Without allegiance to an entity, we can be an independent voice and sounding board for teachers. We want a frank and open discussion about what will improve the working adult education teachers’ salaries, working conditions, and adult education instruction.

What We Need

What We Lost - New Directions

 1. Salary schedule similar to K-12 salary schedule

  • Life-changing – increase in income by 25% or more
  • Complete with steps of K-12 and salary range
  • Full-time is 30 hours + five hours of prep time
  • Get on salary and off hourly
    • More money during career
    • More money in retirement

2. Same matrix as K-12

  • Our matrix now is inferior to that of K-12
    • K-12 has three methods to choose from, voted on by faculty
    • UTLA recommended method is not available to adult teachers
    • Choose a schedule by seniority
      • Our matrix still gives control to the administration.

3. Out of classroom assignments are no more than 50% of hours

  • Distribute out-of-classroom hours to classroom teachers
    • Relieves teacher burnout
      • Especially ESL teachers
      • Three ESL classes a day, with one evening, is much work
  • Out-of-classroom positions instead of evening work

4. Premium for evening classes

  • Evening classes are a burden for:
    • Those who have split shifts
    • Those who have families
    • Those who are older
  • 20% over regular pay or $70 an hour, whichever is greater
  • Shortage of evening teacher application.
    • Premium will make it more attractive

5. Recoup items lost in past negotiations
