New Directions for Adult Education (NDAE.org) is a group of active and retired DACE teachers which strives to improve the working conditions, benefits, and pay of DACE teachers and improve the quality of the education delivered to adult students. The group is not affiliated with UTLA nor its Adult Education Committee, although we are members of UTLA and pro-union. Without allegiance to an entity, we can be an independent voice and sounding board for teachers. We want a frank and open discussion about what will improve the working adult education teachers’ salaries, working conditions, and adult education instruction.
Negotiations will begin soon as the current contract expires at the end of this school year. Choosing items to bring to the negotiation table is critical for union members, and all adult
education teachers must be involved in selecting items for
negotiation.
At the September adult education committee meeting, it was announced that the contract negotiation items would be determined then. This surprised the meeting attendees as there had been no prior announcement or notice and no opportunity for site and teacher input. Also, the selection process and voting were confusing.
Choosing negotiating items is best started at the site level so most teachers can participate. See next page for details.
To ensure the process goes well, all teachers should attend the November 1 adult ed meeting in person or via Zoom at 4:30 p.m. Use the sign-up to get the Zoom meeting link. The in-person meeting will be at UTLA headquarters, 3303 Wilshire Blvd. On the corner of Berendo, three blocks west of Vermont.
